Frosted Sugar Cookie Cutouts

The holidays are not complete without sugar cookies.

Plus, they're really easy to make, and a lot of fun to decorate!

Happy baking!

Sugar Cookie Cutouts

4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla

Powdered Sugar Icing
1 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. milk (plus about 3 tsp.)
Food coloring

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.
Mix butter and sugar together using an electric mixer.
Mix in eggs and vanilla; reduce speed to low.
Gradually add in flour mixture.
Divide dough into quarters; flatten each into a disk.
Wrap each disk in plastic wrap; refrigerate until firm (at least 1 hr)
Preheat oven to 325F with oven rack in upper third.
Roll out dough after letting it sit out for about 10 minutes.
Cut out cookies with cookie cutters; place on baking sheet.
Bake for about 15 minutes (until edges are lightly browned)
Allow to cool before decorating.

Combine powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk together.
Add more milk, 1 tsp. at a time, until icing has reached desired texture. (test by dipping fork into icing and seeing if it runs smoothly)
Separate into little bowls and add food coloring to make desired colors.
